With respect to the multicast service in IB, I would like to mention
that in our recent research, we have studied different
strategies/schemes to achieve a `reliable' MPI-level broadcast support
on top of the UD multicast service. Similar approach can also be taken
for other applications. Thus, an application built with RC service can
still take advantage of the UD-based multicast support. All parts of
the application do not have to be based on UD.

A paper focusing on this (titled, "Fast and Scalable MPI-Level
Broadcast using InfiniBand's Hardware Multicast Support") has been
accepted to be presented at Int'l Parallel and Distributed Processing
Symposium (IPDPS'04) in Santa Fe next month (April 27th). A copy of
this paper is available from
 --> Publications.

We are currently integrating this solution into our MPI implementation
(MVAPICH). The next release of MVAPICH will have this support.

Thanks,

DK
